Finish History Lab (HL Presentation - Review Guatemalan Coup) - Focus Question: What motivated the United States Government to authorize the CIA-sponsored Guatemalan Coup of 1954: Containment or Bananas (protecting American business interests)?
Source Analysis - Students Analyze 7 Sources (All resources) in groups. As a group, students will share their interpretations of the sources, while completing their chart for all seven sources. Students need to complete the Guatemalan Coup Document Analysis Sheet.
Students make an evidence-based determination in regard to the History Lab's focus question. Place a large continuum on the front board, with "Bananas" on one end, and "Containment" on the other end. Have students write their name on sticky notes. If they believe the United States supported the coup in order to protect bananas, they should place their note near the "Banana" sign. If they believe the United States supported the coup in order to contain communism, they should post their note near the word "Containment."
